Frequently Asked Questions – Keystone Chiropractic – Springfield Chiropractor

At Keystone Chiropractic, we know people in Springfield have a lot of questions before visiting a chiropractor. Here are some of the most common questions we hear from new and returning patients.

What makes Keystone Chiropractic different from other chiropractors in Springfield, IL?

At Keystone Chiropractic, we take a precise and gentle approach to chiropractic care through a specialized method called Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic. This technique focuses on the relationship between the head and neck, which can have a powerful effect on how the entire body functions.

Unlike traditional chiropractic care that often involves full-spine adjustments, our approach is focused on restoring alignment at the top of the neck to help your body heal and function at its best. Many patients notice improvements throughout their entire body, not just in the neck or back.

What is Upper Cervical Chiropractic?

Upper Cervical Chiropractic focuses on correcting subtle misalignments in the top two bones of the neck, known as the atlas and axis. These small bones play a big role in how the brain communicates with the rest of the body.

When the upper cervical spine is out of alignment, it can interfere with normal nerve function and blood flow, leading to symptoms like headaches, neck pain, vertigo, and more. By gently and precisely correcting this area, we help restore balance to the nervous system so your body can heal naturally.

Do you accept insurance?

We do accept Medicare. We also accept Personal Injury cases if we feel that they are a good fit for what we do.

Besides that, Keystone Chiropractic operates as a non-insurance clinic. Being a direct-pay chiropractic clinic allows us to offer high-quality, customized care at an affordable price and avoid the hassles of insurance billing, copays, deductibles, and declined reimbursements.

However, we do make a superbill available to our patients, upon request, as a receipt that can be submitted to your insurance.

How do I know if your are a good chiropractor for me?

Our approach to care is incredibly unique and effective. As a result, we often take care of patients who are frustrated and are looking for something different.

We try our best to help people know if they have found the right place. So we created a list of the types of patients we often see in our office. If any of these describe you, we encourage you to schedule your first appointment today.

People with Neurological Conditions
Individuals suffering from conditions like migraines, vertigo, Meniere’s disease, Trigeminal Neuralgia, or post-concussion syndrome often seek upper cervical care due to its focus on optimizing neurological function.

Skeptics of Traditional Chiropractic
Patients who are hesitant about traditional chiropractic care but are intrigued by the scientific, low-force, and specific nature of upper cervical chiropractic.

Patients with Delicate Health Concerns
Upper cervical chiropractic is often sought out by people with conditions requiring extra caution, such as osteoporosis, advanced age, or prior spinal surgeries.

Patients Who Want Measurable Progress, Not Just Pain Relief
It’s not enough to just “feel better.” You want proof that you’re actually healing. That’s why we use Neck-Care progress exams, a breakthrough technology that objectively measures:
✔ Range of Motion (ROM) – Tracks mobility and function
✔ Proprioception Testing – Evaluates how well your body is adapting
✔ Butterfly Test – Assesses neck-to-eye coordination

People Who Want to Graduate to Less Frequent Care
Many chiropractors require weekly visits because misalignments keep coming back. Our goal? To help you stay in alignment, so you don’t need constant adjustments.

Patients who commit to our process often graduate to check-ups instead of needing ongoing weekly care.

What conditions do you commonly help at Keystone Chiropractic?

As a leading Springfield chiropractor, Dr. Fred Schurger helps patients with a wide range of conditions, including:

Many of these conditions improve as nervous system function is restored through Upper Cervical Chiropractic care.

What is the Nasal Release Technique (NRT)?

The Nasal Release Technique (NRT) is a gentle, hands-on procedure that helps restore normal movement and function of the skull’s joints and air passages. It’s often used to help people who suffer from chronic headaches, sinus pressure, post-concussion symptoms, or breathing issues.

By balancing the cranial system, this technique can relieve pressure, improve oxygen flow, and help patients feel clearer and more at ease. Dr. Schurger is one of the few chiropractors in the Springfield area trained in this powerful technique.

Does Upper Cervical Chiropractic hurt?

No. Upper Cervical adjustments are very gentle and precise. There’s no twisting, cracking, or popping involved. Most patients are surprised at how light the correction feels, yet how powerful the results can be.

Our goal is always to make sure your experience is comfortable and relaxing while helping your body function at its best.

How many visits will I need?

Every patient’s situation is unique. Some people in Springfield only need a few visits to correct their problem, while others may benefit from ongoing care to manage chronic conditions or support long-term wellness.

Dr. Schurger focuses on helping you get well in fewer visits, not more. You’ll receive a clear, personalized plan based on your exam, imaging, and goals.

Can chiropractic care help with headaches and migraines?

Yes. Many of our patients come to Keystone Chiropractic looking for a headache or migraine chiropractor in Springfield. Because the upper cervical spine directly impacts blood flow and nerve communication to the head, correcting this area can lead to lasting relief from chronic headaches and migraines.

Patients often report that their headaches are less frequent, less intense, and easier to manage after receiving care.

Can chiropractic care help with vertigo and balance problems?

Absolutely. Vertigo and dizziness are often linked to problems in the upper neck, especially where the brainstem and inner ear systems connect. By restoring normal alignment and nerve function through Upper Cervical Chiropractic, many patients experience better balance, fewer dizzy spells, and improved stability.

What can I expect on my first visit?

Your first visit includes a detailed consultation, neurological and postural testing, and specialized imaging to identify exactly how your spine is misaligned.

Dr. Schurger will take the time to explain what he finds, answer your questions, and outline a personalized care plan to help you get the best results possible.
